I’ve been lamenting a bit that I’ve not written a song in over a year. The dry spell is broken. Today on the front page of the Toronto Star was a picture of the impression of a 5 year old boy left on the grass after he fell from his ninth story balcony… and lived.

The article and picture can be found here (from the Kitchener-Waterloo Record).

In response to this miraculous event, I wrote the following song. (I will try to record a version of it this weekend).

Angels

Words and Lyrics, ©Sean McGaughey (March 29, 2007)

Inspired by news article:

Young Kim stood on the railing

Hair licked by the wind

looking down 9 floors

a mile for a kid

Maybe he thought,

“I’m superman reaching for the sky.”

He took one last step

convinced that he could fly.

(Chorus)

We all have fallen, In our own way.

Seems that life is just a series of mistakes

But sometimes angels slow us when we fall,

Watching over us, Keeping us from harm.

When you fight gravity, it always gets the upper hand

drawn downward– crash upon the ground

Cushioned on the grass, he left a dent of his prone form.

A couple broken legs, but alive.

(Chorus)

We all have fallen, In our own way.

Seems that life is just a series of mistakes

But sometimes angels slow us when we fall,

Watching over us, Keeping us from harm.

Bridge:

How many times have I leapt instead of thought

Stuck in a pickle (jam)

God what have I wrought?

For every fledgling, learning how to fly.

A mother’s greatest fear is that

he’ll fall from the sky.

We may not see angels, but I know that they are real

Waiting to slow us when we fall.

(Chorus)

We all have fallen, In our own way.

Seems that life is just a series of mistakes

But sometimes angels slow us when we fall,

Watching over us, Keeping us from harm.

Episode 3 of for the Sake of the Song features Jennifer Ives.

Jennifer is an old friend and long time accomplice in keeping the music live. She has been the artistic director for the Orillia Folk Society for about 10 years, she has been a board member on the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, and she is constantly rounding up people for various musical events. She is also a fine singer and songwriter. I hope you have as much fun listening to this episode as we did recording it.

Podcasting.

In the last week, I have recorded shows for For the Sake of the Song, with Steve Porter, Jennifer Ives, Jay Moonah, Aaron Howes, Ken Allen, Pushbuttons, and I have 2 more interviews lined up for tomorrow.

I also recorded a YouTube video for children with my good friend, Russ Clayton, for his RussTV program.

I was featured on the Buffalo Live! Music Podcast, mentioned on the Deyscast, and had a little audio bit in this week’s .

Oh, and I helped a friend with moving, spent 2 days holidaying in Toronto with my family, had a birthday party for my Mom and hung out with both my sisters. (And there are still 2 days left!)
