Please allow me a little self indulgence here.  (Who am I kidding– podcasting is a self-indulgent activity).  Last week I met with my friend Ron Belanger at theGood Vibes Coffee House to pick up my new Ron Belanger handmade guitar.  Here is a recording of my first set of my own songs with my new guitar.  Enjoy.

Artemis Chartier

Chartier and Dale Russell are the founders of the School Alliance for Student Songwriters (SASS), a group which facilitates songwriting clubs in schools and arranges songwriting showcases and contests for students in the Durham County region of Ontario and in British Columbia.

I met them in September at the launch party/brainstorming session for the Stellula Songwriting in the Schools initiative here in Simcoe County. Artemis Chartier is a high school teacher and singer-songwriter. Dale Russell was a guitar player with the Guess Who for 17 years in the 80’s and 90s. They are lovely people and wonderful songwriters. Be sure to check out the SASS website to see the wonderful things they are doing with enabling young people to tell their stories through song.

This show I have no guest. Instead I’m looking back on past episodes, forward to future shows, and I play the newest song that I’ve written. I was inspired to write after over a year by Stevie Z’s monthly songwriting challenge at badlybent.ca.

The August challenge was

  1. GENRE - Country
  2. TOPIC - Summer
  3. WORD/PHRASE - Bridge

Tom Slatter is a London, UK based songwriter and podcaster. He is half of the acoustic pop duo We’ll Write and produces the wonderful Songwright blog and podcast where he explores music theory to get inside the structure and process of crafting a song. He has recently released a free Ebook of Songwriting Worksheets for the Songwriting Guitarist as an incentive for people to sign up for his mailing list. In it, he includes, For the Sake of the Song on a list of online songwriting resources. Check out my feature interview with Tom: For the Sake of the Song with Tom Slatter

Wild Turkeys

On the afternoon of May 15, the Wild Turkey Outfit performed at my school for 300+ appreciative children and their teachers. They wowed the children with their down-home charm and their tight blugrass and western harmonies.

Afterwards, I was also able to interview them for For the Sake of the Song.

Washboard Hank

Earlier this year, I interviewed Washboard Hank, about his memories of Willie P. Bennett.

I was able to interview Hank at the Twisted Pines Music in Movies festival about his own music and songwriting. Washboard Hank is a Canadian folk music institution. He has released several CDs of quirky and humorous music, a Children’s CD and played for many years in Fred Eaglesmith’s band. Our interview delved into the meat of songwriting but also features some of his more adult oriented material so I’m putting an Itunes explicit label on this episode.

James Gordon with a Ron Belanger guitar

James Gordon has been a fixture of the Canadian folk music scene for over 25 years. He was a founding member of Tamarack, and played with them for 22 years before going solo about 10 years ago. He has written hometown songs and humorous songs for CBC radio, and has written a number of musical plays. I interviewed James at the Mariposa Folk Festival on the deck of his hand-made houseboat, the Eramosa Belle. For this episode, James and I both played a lovely handmade guitar built by Ron Belanger. You can find out how to purchase any of James’ 40 CDs at http://jamesgordon.ca.

Ashley Condon, Douglas John Cameron

Once a month, George Scott and Jason Cliche host a Songwriter’s Showcase at the beautiful Gibson Centre in Alliston, Ontario. I drove the family down on March 2 for a wonderful afternoon of original music featuring Ashley Condon and Douglas John Cameron. I sat down with Ashley for an interview after the show. Ashley Condon was raised in PEI and now lives in Guelph, Ontario. This episode is a little unusual because I use live footage from the concert, interspersed with our interview. I also hope to feature Douglas John Cameron on an upcoming episode.
