Michelle Rumball has been a fixture of the Toronto Music scene for almost 20 years. In the early 90s she was lead singer for folk-rock legends, The Grevious Angels. She now writes and performs as a solo singer-songwriter, as a member of the new trio Beauty Saloon, and in a number of bands around Toronto. I caught up to her at the wonderful Rockin’ The Cradle series of concerts promoted by my sister as a venue for people who love music with babies and young children.

I’ve known Don Bray for about 17 years. We met at an open stage, and I was struck by his insightful lyrics and virtuoso musicianship from the first time I heard him. He was one of the first people I wanted to interview for my podcast but it took a couple years for us to connect. It was worth the wait. I think it’s fitting that he is my guest for episode 100.

We sat down in a quiet room during our songwriting group’s annual winter getaway weekend. He was accompanied on vocals, Cello, and title reminders by Alyssa Wright. Don and Alyssa are both solo performers but they have also released their first CD as The Brights: Live, Love, Dream.

Last summer, I attended Podcamp Boston. While Zina (from the Secrets of Battlestar Galactica Podcast) and I were walking in downtown Boston heading for lunch, we saw a beautiful young lady walking down the street talking into laptop held in front of her. It turned out that she streams her whole life on the Internet. Later at podcamp, I ran into her again and introduced myself. She is Jody Gnant and she has an amazing story to tell about indie marketing over the net. She actually traded one year’s rent on her house in Phoenix to Kyle MacDonald from one red paperclip for studio time to complete her album. We talked at the end of a long day at Podcamp Boston about songwriting, new media, and took questions from her live streaming audience. Check out her music and lifecast at jodygnant.com.

I went and forgot my second podcasting anniversary. On March 12, 2007, I released Episode 01- For the Sake of the Song- The Podcast. In the past two years I have interviewed many songwriters, written a few songs, and recorded a kajillion concerts and special events. This morning, my wife and I went through the archives of ductapeguy.net and counted 84 audio podcast episodes of For the Sake of the Song and 11 video episodes. That makes this special video release episode 95. I also have a show completed with Sean Peever for release on March 30, and I have about 7 episodes that I need to edit. Reaching the 100th episode has been quite a goal for me and I can see it from here.

While I was compiling stats, I revisited my post, Milestones, from April 22, 2008 where I totaled up all my podcast episodes. At the time I had produced over 236 audio programs.

In the last year, I have released 45 Episodes of For the Sake of the Song, for a total of 95. I also produced 51 Episodes of Catholic Roundup podcast under 3 show names: A Catholic Canadian, The Catholic New Media Roundup and now Catholic Roundup. We produced 4 new episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast this winter for a total of 18 episodes. I also released 4 special reports about Podcamp Boston 2 in 2007. My recording of my brother in law, Drew Beatty’s podcast novel, White Trash Land has 23 sections. Drew is currently podcasting his second novel Lost Gods. From 2006-2008, I hosted about 20 episodes of the Librivox Community Podcast. I have also completed 115 sections of public domain books and poetry for Librivox. I have 21 videos up on my youtube page. There are probably a couple special one-off projects with groups like Twisted pines that I’m overlooking as well. I also regularly record audio feedback for other podcasts and record concerts and demos for myself and others but have no accurate count of those, so I’m only counting audio and video I’ve released on the net.

100 audio and video programs that I have produced in the last 11 months for a total of 336 finished audio and video programs.

(give or take a few)

This month also marks the 2nd anniversary of RussTV, my good friend Russ Clayton’s YouTube program for children. I have been on his show several times over the past two years. I was on RussTV: Episode 4- Guiters and Banjers and Episode 9: Down By The Little Lake.

This week, we recorded 2 more public domain songs for Russ TV: Wild Mountain Thyme and Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Enjoy.

I caught up to him at the Mariposa Folk Festival after a long day of workshops and great music. We were both in a bit of a pensive and reflective mood. Jory has 5 CDs to his credit. He is an insightful songwriter and a dynamic performer. For this episode, Jory and I played a lovely handmade guitar built by Ron Belanger. After the festival was over, I ended up buying one of Ron’s guitars.

Dale Russell was a guitar player with the Guess Who for 17 years in the 80′s and 90s. They are lovely people and wonderful songwriters.
Earlier this year, I interviewed Washboard Hank, about his memories of Willie P. Bennett.

I was able to interview Hank at the Twisted Pines Music in Movies festival about his own music and songwriting. Washboard Hank is a Canadian folk music institution. He has released several CDs of quirky and humorous music, a Children’s CD and played for many years in Fred Eaglesmith’s band. Our interview delved into the meat of songwriting but also features some of his more adult oriented material so I’m putting an Itunes explicit label on this episode.

Once a month, George Scott and Jason Cliche host a Songwriter’s Showcase at the beautiful Gibson Centre in Alliston, Ontario. I drove the family down on March 2 for a wonderful afternoon of original music featuring Ashley Condon and Douglas John Cameron. I sat down with Ashley for an interview after the show. Ashley Condon was raised in PEI and now lives in Guelph, Ontario. This episode is a little unusual because I use live footage from the concert, interspersed with our interview. I also hope to feature Douglas John Cameron on an upcoming episode.

Fortunately, I was able to arrange an interview with Kyle Heimann of Popple. Popple are getting quite well known around the podosphere for their quirky, funny nerdy songs about life and faith.

Unfortunately, we had to reschedule the interview.

Fortunately, Kyle installed Skype so we could record in relatively high quality using his professional mic and mixer.

Unfortunately, his connection would cut out for about 4 seconds every minute or so.

Fortunately, he was willing to use Skype just as a conduit and record his own end of the conversation then I could piece them together.

Fortunately, that meant he could play songs live on the recording.

Unfortunately, the problem wasn’t with Kyle’s internet connection. His computer was taking a 5 sec nap every few minutes.

Fortunately, I just spliced in the album cuts of Popple’s songs.

Unfortunately, my editing program crashed just before I finished the editing, and I neglected to save it.

Fortunately, I had the original files, and just edited them together again.

Unfortunately, just as I finished saving the Mp3, I was tidying my hard disk and DELETED the WHOLE WORKING FOLDER!!!!! AARRGGHHH!!!

Fortunately, I edited it back together again and it’s awesome.

We were joined by Paul Northcott the A.D. of the Twisted Pines Festival who shared some of his memories of Willie P., and gave a sneak peek into some of the events happening at the Twisted Pines Music in Movies Festival on May 5-19 in Midland and Penetanguishene. Washboard Hank will be performing at the festival, and I hope to record a full episode of For the Sake of the Song with him, showcasing his songwriting and his music.

Information and tickets for the festival can be found at http://twistedpines.com.

About 18 months ago, we made the difficult decision to close the Mundy’s Bay Folk Society after 17 years due to rising expenses and declining attendance at our monthly live music performances.

I was quite excited when a new organization in our town sprung up to present live music. Twisted Pines Music and Art produced a 5 day festival of music, movies and visual arts last Victoria Day weekend at a variety of locations in Midland and Penetanguishene. I helped out stage managing one of the stages, and recording as many interviews as I could for my podcast. It’s not often that so many songwriters are in one place in my hometown.

Over the past year Twisted Pines has been quite active in producing a variety of events in my area: concerts, movies, author readings at local libraries, performances in local schools and regular after school workshops at the Penetanguishene library.

This May 9-19, they are presenting Twisted Pines Music in Movies featuring nightly screenings of music themed movies and documentaries, followed by Q and A sessions with filmakers and musicians involved in the movies and performances by some amazing bands. Festival Performers will also be doing presentations at a number of local schools during the weeks of the Festival. I’ll be there recording interviews, helping out where I can, and enjoying the general vibe of the festival.

Over the past year I have produced nearly a dozen programs in conjuction with Twisted Pines Music and Art. Check out the following:

There is a wonderful music store in Downtown Midland, Johnstone’s Music Land which has been run by 3 generations of the same family. It is a funky small town music store which has over the years sold musical instruments, stereos, rented rehearsal space, sold records, then tapes, then CDs, and rented PA equipment. They also were great about having a rack in front of the store for recordings by local musicians. In short, it is much like any other small town music store. I pop in there when I need strings for my guitar or just to shoot the breeze. When I went in the other day to chat, I noticed that the CD racks have been replaced by shelves and shelves of sheet music and more floor space for instruments. I asked Steve if they had gotten out of CD sales. He said that it was no longer profitable for a small business to stock and sell CDs. It’s been many years since I bought a mainstream CD, so I asked when they had had gotten rid of the CDs. He said that it was 2 years ago. I hadn’t even noticed. It was the only retail store where you could buy my CD. Ouch.

I also noticed a couple weeks ago that the gigantic Music World in a mall in Barrie has closed down and has not been replaced. I guess the world really has moved to digital.

I realized that I have enough feedback and responses to For the Sake of the Song to prepare a feedback episode, so here goes.

K7 Day on March 17 was a resounding success. I sent out voice messages to about 11 podcasts, and I received 3 voicemail messages: 1 for a Catholic Canadian and two which I’ll play here. Just a reminder that tomorrow is March K27. Take 7 minutes to send some voice feedback to a podcaster or two. K7 Day was also featured on the Canadian Podcast Buffet. Thanks Mark and Bob.

Check out the K7 Day group on Facebook. Join the group and remember to add to the conversation by leaving a message for a podcaster on the 7th, 17th and 27th of the month. P.S. my K7 feedback number is 206-337-0611 . I am hoping that this meme will catch on as the months go by.

A few episodes back, I featured an interview with Tom Slatter. Apparently that interview inspired Tom to think about why he started the Songwright blog and podcast. Here is Songwright – A Manifesto (kind of) « Songwright. I’m flattered to have inspired a manifesto– sort of.

Voice Feedback from: John Meadows of the exceptional On the Log podcast. Drew Beatty also left a voice message.

I recieved an email from Stevie Z from The Sieve recommending that I check out Robbie Hancock. I will definitely do that.
I got another email recommendation from Maria Johnson suggesting that I interview Joe Tunon (holymoly.net). I’ve done that and it’s scheduled for release on June 20. I love getting guest recommendations from my listeners. I figure that if someone likes another person’s songwriting enough to recommend them, then I should check that writer out. Thus far I’ve done about 4 shows based on listener recommendations. Keep them coming.

My daughter has taken to writing lovely songs. I have a recording of her singing Alley Cat.

For the Sake of the Song and A Catholic Canadian are finally available on the Itunes Music Store. It took me some time to get around to it because there is no Itunes client for linux and in order to submit a podcast, you have to have an Itunes account which requires that you give Apple a credit card number. Don’t get me started on that.

As always, you can leave comments on the blog, send me an email to ductapeguy at hotmail dot com, send me a voice feedback at 206-337-0611, or join the For The Sake of the Song Podcast group on Facebook.

It’s been a fun time. In that year I’ve released 45 podcast episodes of For the Sake of the Song, but I’ve actually produced 54 episodes. I have shows ready to release on the 10th, 20th and 30th of each month up to the middle of June. I have enjoyed interviewing other songwriters and it has certainly given me many insights into how and why people write songs.

I’m not going to say which episodes or guests were my favorites. Like songs or children, they are all my favorite. However, I’m interested in knowing which guests or songs were your favorites in the past year.

You can send your comments to ductapeguy@hotmail.com, leave me a voicemail at 206-337-0611. (Long distance charges to Seattle may apply),. or leave me comments here on the blog.

If I get enough response over the next few days, I might prepare a best of … clip show.

He lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and grew up in Hollywood, California so he has lots of great stories.

Corin Raymond and I began a conversation at the Minesing Unplugged Festival in June and completed it at the end of October at a house concert in Midland. For the first part of the conversation, we focused on Corin’s solo music career, then we were joined in October by Sean Cotton, Corin’s partner in the Undesirables, so we were able to discuss the differences between writing as a solo performer and writing for a duo. The Undesirables have a new cd out entitled, Doghouse Dreams Our host for the evening, Jiving Johnny also contributed to the conversation.

Here’s a little roundup of my podcasting activity for 2007.

I have released 40 Episodes of For the Sake of the Song thus far and have about 9 ready to go in the upcoming weeks.

On the weekend of October 28, I was feeling sorry for myself that I wasn’t at Podcamp Boston 2 so I called several of my friends who were at Podcamp Boston and released about 4 Podcamp Boston Special Reports.

These reports evolved into a regular podcast for Podcamp Toronto with Connie Crosby. We have currently produced 6 Episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast leading up to the event on February 23 and 24.

I produced a Podcamp Toronto audio promo to use on your podcast here.

2007 Also saw the release of my recording of my brother-in-law, Drew Beatty’s novel, White Trash Land, on Podiobooks.com . It has done fairly well for Andrew there.

I’ve continued to record audiobooks with Librivox.org and I continue to be a semi-regular host for the Librivox Community Podcast. Here is a list of the 15 podcasts I hosted for Librivox in 2007.

This Week, I thought I would do an End of year Round-up of For the Sake of the Song and replay some of the great music I’ve featured this year. It was tricky picking just 12 or 13 songs. Since March, I have recorded 45+ episodes of For the Sake of the Song. If each song had 3 or 4 songs, thats over 120 songs to choose from. This is episode 37, so you can see from above that I already have a number of shows ready for 2008. Upcoming guests include John Lunman, Peter Judd , The Undesirables, Trout Fishing in America, Mark Blevis, Manitoba Hal, Pork Belly Futures and Chris Yale.

I have also continued to be a regular contributor to the Librivox Community Podcast and have started a podcast for Podcamp Toronto. In 2007, I produced about 60 podcast episodes, and I’m not sure how many chapters and poems for Librivox.

I called Bill Deys of the Deyscast, Country Music Cast, and host of the Podcamp Boston back chat room shortly after Podcamp wrapped up. We spoke of the announcement that Podcamp is lifting Rule #4 that all podcamps be free to participants. This may help reduce the number of people who register for Podcamps but do not show up. We also talked about how I am an Internet Visionary. Three weeks ago I posted LOLephants on my Catholic Canadian blog, with lolcat captions on pictures of me. It included this picture of me running? from a T-Rex.

As often happens at conferences like this, a bunch of people had a crazy idea about LOLCats with dinosaurs. Before the end of the conference, Nico Pin had developed a website design, they had registered the domain and lolsaur.com was born.
I think it’s so cool that I had a similar idea three weeks earlier. Way to go guys. Bill handed the phone to Nico at this point. Nico and I talked about the ongoing discussion around having wifi at conferences like this. On the one hand, it’s a boon to people like me who can’t physically be at the conference, but can still participate via the Internet. On the other hand, it can detract from the SOCIAL part of social media– actually meeting the people you have encountered on the internet.

I hope you enjoyed my remote coverage of Podcamp Boston as much as I enjoyed creating it. Thanks to Mark, Bob, Nico, Jay and Bill for taking the time to talk with me.

Oh and I WILL be at Podcamp Toronto on February 23 and 24.

This episode of the Librivox Community Podcast marks my (ductapeguy’s) one year anniversary of podcasting. To celebrate, Jim Mowatt and I had a wide ranging skype conversation. I really consider being a Librivox volunteer and helping to produce the community podcast was my University of Podcasting. During the conversation we talk about current news around the Librivox community, as well as my other podcasts, For the Sake of the Song, and White Trash Land.

Topics Discussed:

Librivox on Twitter

Gesine provides an overview of ways to subscribe to librivox books using RSS, itunes, or by Email. Thanks To Tis and JackDale for setting up the code for the Chapter a Day Emails. You can also now click a link on the forum page of any work in progress to be informed when that audiobook is complete.

Explanation of the recent outages on Librivox.org

Changes to the Librivox Uploader.

Discussion of the Flac Audio format.

Sean and Jim discuss a terrible user review Sean received on podiobooks.com and the librivoxian response to it. The discussion continued into the time honored, “What if I suck?” into styles of reading and the privilege and responsibility it is to be a reader of another person’s words.
