• Update: Somehow, the amazing lovehatethings blog and podcast slipped under the radar of my awareness.  My loss.   Anthony Marco is a blogging and podcast machine.  In a little over a year, he has posted about 500 articles and 104 podcasts about, technology, pop culture, music, social media, the copyfight, a pinch of sarcasm and a pound of rant.  Congratulations Anthony on reaching the your 100th episode.  I’m late to the party listening to your podcast but I’m hooked.

1. Frugal Tech points you to the best free and open source solutions to everyday tech problems.  I recently used one of their tutorials to set up a home server based on freeNAS.
2. Michael Geist: Ottawa Law professor gives reasoned commentary on copyright, privacy and technology news.  (Looks like I picked him last year too.  Still the best source for a Canadian slant on the copyfight).
3. GraphJam: Music and Pop Culture in Charts and Graphs. Let us explain them. OK, I’m a nerd.  And this is really funny stuff.
4. Blaise Alleyne I thought I was the only Catholic, folk singing, songwriting, copyfighting, linux user in Canada.  Apparently there are at least two.
   
5. hughmcguire.net Hugh McGuire, the co-founder of Book Oven and LibriVox blogs about writing and publishing in the Internet age.

Nova Scotia Songwriter, Dave Gunning was in town last week for a few days working in schools courtesy of Stellula Music in the Schools.  Dave Gunning  singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and session player.  He will be releasing his eighth album this spring. He received two 2008 East Coast Music Awards for Male Artist of the Year and Folk Recording of the Year for his sixth recording, “House For Sale.” You can purchase his albums through his website at davegunning.com.

For the Sake of The Song is fast approaching its 100th episode.  Join us for a live recording celebrating this milestone on Friday June 5, 2009 at 7pm EDT at the Rye Cafe in Midland, Ontario.   My guests for the evening will be Marlon Gibbons, Jennifer Ives and Ken Allen.  We will be recording one or two live episodes of For the Sake of the Song followed by musical performances by each of us.  We will also be streaming the event live over ustream.  Stay tuned to ductapeguy.net for more details.  There is no cover charge for this event, but we will be accepting donations for Stellula Music in the Schools.

I’ll let my sister explain it from her blog.

I’m just a regular music loving mama who loves being a parent, but misses going to and playing live music, so I decided to organize rock shows for parents that kids can come to and enjoy. These are all age shows that are appropriate for babes in arms, toddlers, children, teenagers, parents, grandparents, etc. etc. The only people who shouldn’t come are those who dislike children (there will be a lot of children in attendance)!

This month’s concert is on February 22 from 1-3 pm at the Tranzac Club (292 Brunswick Avenue) features Bry Webb from the Constantines and a group called Positive Thinking Seminar (at least I think they are a band ). The event is pay as you can and families are encouraged to come out. Apparently the Tranzac also serves a yummy Sunday brunch at that time.

I’ll be booting over there right after Podcamp Toronto wraps up and spending some time with my family listening to some great music.

Michael Geist’s Blog Michael Geist is a law professor and one of Canada’s leading authorities on copyright law.  He is leading the fight against the ill-advised Bill C-61.

1. I used to perform in musical theatre at the South Simcoe Theatre – Home in Cookstown, Ontario.

James Gordon has been a fixture of the Canadian folk music scene for over 25 years. He was a founding member of Tamarack, and played with them for 22 years before going solo about 10 years ago. He has written hometown songs and humorous songs for CBC radio, and has written a number of musical plays. I interviewed James at the Mariposa Folk Festival on the deck of his hand-made houseboat, the Eramosa Belle. For this episode, James and I both played a lovely handmade guitar built by Ron Belanger. The power of the community has been seen at Podcamp Philadelphia with the coining of the term bacn for email you want, but do not want to be overwhelmed with.  Over the course of a couple hours, the idea was coined and viral means of disemminating the message and how to deal with bacn were successfully deployed.

At Podcamp Boston, the silly meme of LOLsaurs was conceived, launched and taken to the front page of Digg in less than 18 hours.

Initiatives like the Frozen Pea Fund, and Dave Fleet’s Social Media Marathon demonstrate that the podcasting community is deeply socially aware and responsive to issues outside the community.

With Podcasters across borders just a week away, I’m wondering how we can use the collective energy and intelligence of the podcasting community to create some kind of a viral fuss around stopping Bill C-61 which will bring American copyright craziness to Canada?   Any ideas?

My current episode of For the Sake of the Song with Kyle Heimann from Popple is Episode 50.   I was feeling a little down that it will be some time before I reach my 100th episode, then I started doing soime math.  I currently have  6 more shows ‘in the can’ to be released between now and the end of June.  With podcast extras, and other special episodes I have 65 produced shows on my For the Sake of the Song site.  I also produced 25 audio podcasts for my Lenten multimedia project, 40 Days of Catholic Media on my Catholic Canadian site. We produced 14 episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast this winter.  My recording of my brother in law, Drew Beatty’s podcast novel, White Trash Land has 23 sections.    Since October 2006, I have hosted about 20 episodes of the Librivox Community Podcast.  I have also completed 89 sections of public domain books and poetry for Librivox.   There are probably a couple special one-off projects with groups like Twisted pines that I’m overlooking as well.

Just a sec while I do the math here.

65 plus 25– carry the one,  add 14 plus 23, then 20 more add 89 equals…

236 audio programs that I have produced in the last 18 months or so.

(give or take a few)

Well none of my projects is currently near the century mark, I do believe I’m amassing a fair body of work.

Enough of blowing my own horn.  I now return you to the regularly scheduled conversations with some wonderful songwriters.

I also noticed a couple weeks ago that the gigantic Music World in a mall in Barrie has closed down and has not been replaced. I guess the world really has moved to digital.

K7 Day on March 17 was a resounding success. I sent out voice messages to about 11 podcasts, and I received 3 voicemail messages: 1 for a Catholic Canadian and two which I’ll play here. Just a reminder that tomorrow is March K27. Take 7 minutes to send some voice feedback to a podcaster or two. K7 Day was also featured on the Canadian Podcast Buffet. Thanks Mark and Bob.

I recieved an email from Stevie Z from The Sieve recommending that I check out Robbie Hancock. I will definitely do that.
I got another email recommendation from Maria Johnson suggesting that I interview Joe Tunon (holymoly.net). I’ve done that and it’s scheduled for release on June 20. I love getting guest recommendations from my listeners. I figure that if someone likes another person’s songwriting enough to recommend them, then I should check that writer out. Thus far I’ve done about 4 shows based on listener recommendations. Keep them coming.

My daughter has taken to writing lovely songs. I have a recording of her singing Alley Cat.

For the Sake of the Song and A Catholic Canadian are finally available on the Itunes Music Store. It took me some time to get around to it because there is no Itunes client for linux and in order to submit a podcast, you have to have an Itunes account which requires that you give Apple a credit card number. Don’t get me started on that.

I have released 40 Episodes of For the Sake of the Song thus far and have about 9 ready to go in the upcoming weeks.

On the weekend of October 28, I was feeling sorry for myself that I wasn’t at Podcamp Boston 2 so I called several of my friends who were at Podcamp Boston and released about 4 Podcamp Boston Special Reports.

These reports evolved into a regular podcast for Podcamp Toronto with Connie Crosby. We have currently produced 6 Episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast leading up to the event on February 23 and 24.

Ontario Council of Folk Festivals: Songs from the Heart Competition

Dear Mr. Stanton:

It was good to chat with you at Saint Marie Among the Hurons last week. I am always encouraged to see our elected officials active and accessible to the community. I am writing to express my concern of the proposed revisions to Canada’s copyright act which has been widely publicized in the press. As a primary school teacher, independent singer-songwriter, producer of an Internet radio program, and a producer of free public-domain audiobooks, I have learned a great deal about the current copyright climate and I have some grave concerns with the reported changes to the copyright act.
My greatest concern is that these sweeping changes are being made without public consultation with Canadians, such as myself who produce creative works. There also seems to me no concern as to how these changes will impact will effect ordinary Canadians, and it is reported that there are no provisions made for fair dealing, for educational use, for parody and other legitimate exemptions.
Other reports I have read indicate that some of the language for the proposed bill may have come from templates provided by the CRIA. Please remember that since all the independent record labels left the organization last year, the CRIA is a spokesgroup for the multinational recording labels, and many independent Canadian businesses and artists are on the record as opposing their positions and tactics. The proposed changes as reported seem to adopt all the excesses of the United States DMCA, giving enormous rights to the owners of content with little balance as to the rights of the users– ordinary Canadians. The American system of suing college students and grandmothers for copyright infingement is fundamentally flawed. We should not repeat the American’s mistakes. We have the opportunity to find a uniquely Canadian, balanced copyright regime that respects the rights of content owners for a reasonable length of time, but also defines and respects the rights of the ordinary Canadians who purchase and use these creations. I would urge you to press for an open consultation within the government process to help Canada revise its copyright law to adequately respect the rights of all Canadians. As one of your constituents, I would happy to speak with you at more length about my perspective on copyright issues.

My guest today is the respected Canadian folk icon, Bob Snider. Bob is a fingerstyle guitarist, songwriter, and poet who has all the musicians at a festival running across the field to catch his set. Over the past 20 years, he has released 7 of his own albums and appeared on countless compilations. There has also been a tribute album made of his songs. He has written two books on Gaspereau Press: On Songwriting and On Performance. His new CD on Borealis Records is called ‘A Maze In Greys‘.

Today, Culture Canada launched podcasts.culture.ca to showcase Canadian culture in podcast form. My friends Hugh McGuire and Chris Goringe from Librivox were active behind the scenes setting this up. I’m not sure that it differs substantially in content from the amazing Canadian Podcast Directory at canadapodcasts.ca, but it is really neat to see my podcast and my picture featured on an official Government of Canada website.

That seals it. For the Sake of the Song is officially a Canadian Cultural Experience. Sort of like Tim Hortons and Beaver Tails I guess.

Last weekend I went to Toronto to the Linux Caffe for a workshop on how to use the free, Open Source, Ardour Digital Audio Workstation software. I had high hopes for the workshop which would be attended by linux geek musicians, and I was not disappointed. The facilitator for the workshop, Ben Powers wrote much of the documentation for the ardour project and he knows the program inside and out. One of the other attendees, who introduced himself as Greg, posed many insightful questions which led be to believe that he was likely a very experienced musician. On my way out the building he led me across the road on the corner of Harbord street to see a Bass he had made— out of a light standard. This really has to be seen and heard to be believed so have a listen to this special podcast episode. In the interview, Greg mentioned that he has made and maintains 2 more streetlamp basses: in Kensington Market, and on the Philosophers walk near to the Faculty of Music at the U of T.

My guest next episode is Olivia Duck. As some of you may know, I have several months of For the Sake of the Song scheduled ahead of time in WordPress. Its been a great summer vacation for me. I’ve spent it being a more-or-less full time podcaster. This summer I recorded over 20 interviews for future podcasts and completed 18 episodes of For the Sake of the Song. I also produced two episodes of the Librivox Community podcast. There is no guest this episode. Just me giving a recap of the summer.

4. This is Show 23 and I have enjoyed the ongoing conversation with songwriters. Some of my favorites include sitting down with Greg Hobbs and Wendell Ferguson, and meeting people like Nancy Dutra, and John Wort Hannam. Greg Hobbs talking about his song forms.
5. I’m also finding that mentioning the podcast is a great conversation starter with other musicians. I continue to enjoy exploring the many reasons why and how people write songs. I’m trying to speak with the whole spectrum of songwriters from teenagers with stars in their eyes to hobbyists happy to share their songs at open stages, to the seasoned veterans.

   1. My concept for 4TSOTS is that it is not a series of individual shows but an ongoing conversation– not just with myself and another musician, but with you the audience as well. I have not been good at soliciting feedback but I have received some good feedback, both in the comments on ductapeguy.net and face to face.

This is the fourth of five interviews I recorded at the Twisted Pines Music Festival in my hometown of Midland, on the Victoria Day Weekend.

My guest this episode is Magoo. Magoo is a musician of many hats. Literally. He wears them in his children’s shows or when MCing evening concerts at a multitude of festivals. He has produced several children’s albums as half of Kirk and Magoo, and his album Shirt Pay is a wonderful collection of his singer-songwriter material. I got to hang out with him for most of the weekend at Twisted Pines because he was performing at the stage I was managing.

We recorded this outside the arena sitting on a picnic table, with several interruptions. First, the batteries went dead on my recorder, so I lost the first 8 minutes of the interview. Then we were photographed and interviewed for a local paper. Finally, our mutual friends, Carol Teal and David Joyce walked up. Magoo, Carol and Dave are all members of Artscan Circle, a group of musicians who gather donated musical instruments to take to remote northern communities.

If you like what you hear, you can see Magoo at the Eaglewood Folk Festival this weekend (August 24-26).

This is the fourth of five interviews I recorded at the Twisted Pines Music Festival in my hometown of Midland, on the Victoria Day Weekend.

My guest this episode is Hammel on Trial. Ed Hamell is a folk-punk singer songwriter from New York City. His biography describes him as:

Bad ass singer/songwriter, joke-telling Hamell On Trial defies all musical categories. “Punk acoustic” and “anti-folk” come close. Warbling, super-sensitive folk singer he definitely is not. If you’re looking for cum-bye-yah by some soft-strumming, tearful folkie, Hamell On Trial is going to offend you. On stage his raw, bold energy has Rolling Stone magazine calling him a “homicidal Otto Preminger.”
