Collette Savard is a singer-songwriter with two CDs out, Zen Boyfriend and Most Improved Cheerleader.  She performs as a duo with her producer, multi-instrumentalist, John Zytaruk. They came to my school last week courtesy of Stellula Music as part of their Music in the Schools Week.  At the end of the week, Collette, John and I sat down for a long discussion touching on songwriting, arranging, passing the music on to the younger generation, copyright and more. Enjoy.

The  Creaking Tree String Quartet is a band which pushes the boundaries of string band music, offering a fusion of roots, jazz and classical music performed with playfulness and virtuosity.  Since their inception in 2001, they have travelled extensively, recorded 3 albums, and received 2 Juno nominations.   It was a pleasure to host the Creaking Tree String Quartet at my elementary school in May as part of Stellula Music in the Schools week.  I spoke with Ben and John from the band shortly after their school performance.

Pork Belly Futures

For many years I have enjoyed the novels of Paul Quarrington. Paul is a Canadian author who has written novels, magazine articles, screenplays and songs for over 30 years. He has received the prestigious Governor General’s Literary award for English Fiction and the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. In the early 80′s, he had a number 1 Canadian single with Martin Worthy as Quarrington-Worthy. He and Martin Worthy also toured for many years with Joe Hall and The Continental Drift. They are still together as the core of Pork Belly Futures, which also includes Chas Elliot, Stuart Laughton and Rebecca Campbell.

This episode of For the Sake of the Song is a bit unusual. In November, Pork Belly Futures played a benefit concert for the Twisted Pines Music Festival in Penetanguishene. Paul Quarrington and Claire Cameron also did public readings at the Midland and Penetanguishene public libraries. Their day was so tightly booked that I could not record a dedicated 1/2 hour interview with Paul. Instead, you will hear us at the library readings, performances by Pork Belly Futures at the concert that evening, and short interviews with Paul Quarrington, Martin Worthy and Chas Elliot.

I first saw Katherine Wheatley perform at the Eaglewood Folk Festival in about 1993.  She became an instant favorite of mine.  Over the years we have seen her in concert dozens of times, and several years ago I had the pleasure of opening for her and Wendell Ferguson at the Orillia Folk Society.  Katherine Wheatley is a veteran of the Canadian Folk and roots music scene.  She plays in a number of bands.  She is a solid guitar player. Her vocals and melodies are as expansive as the prairies.  In her songs, she weaves wonderful stories of ordinary people that are deeply rooted in Canadian soil.

She released two albums in the 90′s, ‘Straight Line’ and ‘Habits and Heroes’.  Her long awaited new album, Landed is now available on her website.  You can find her music at katherinewheatley.com.

I interviewed Katherine on the grounds of the Canterbury Folk Festival in Ingersoll in the midst of their 10th anniversary celebration.  You can hear some of the festivities going on around us.

On Friday June  we had a wonderful evening at the  Rye Cafe in Midland. My guests were  Marlon Gibbons, Jennifer Ives and Ken Allen. We will be recording two live episodes of For the Sake of the Song  then broke into a magical jam.  Most of the evening was streamed live over ustream.  I had several of my friends and listeners of for The Sake of the Song join us from all over Ontario and several in the ustream from all over North America.  It was a wonderful evening celebration of music and friendship.  Unfortunately, there were technical difficulties with the audio recording, so all we have recorded from the evening is a recording from the live video stream starting about 7 minutes into the interview with Marlon Gibbons.  Henceforth I will be refering to this as the famous ‘lost episode’ of For the Sake of the Song.  Enjoy a bit of what was a magical evening.

Update While writing this post, I relistened to the ustream video from the evening. The conversation and the energy was so wonderful that it overcomes the low quality audio from my webcam’s pinhole mic. I’ve known Don Bray for about 17 years.  We met at an open stage, and I was struck by his insightful lyrics and virtuoso musicianship from the first time I heard him.  He was one of the first people I wanted to interview for my podcast but it took a couple years for us to connect.  It was worth the wait.  I think it’s fitting that he is my guest for episode 100.

We sat down in a quiet room during our songwriting group’s annual winter getaway weekend.  He was accompanied on vocals, Cello, and title reminders by Alyssa Wright.  Don and Alyssa are both solo performers but they have also released their first CD as The Brights: Live, Love, Dream.

Last summer,  I attended Podcamp Boston.  While Zina (from the Secrets of Battlestar Galactica Podcast) and I were walking in downtown Boston heading for lunch, we saw a beautiful young lady walking down the street talking into laptop held in front of her.  It turned out that she streams her whole life on the Internet.  Later at podcamp, I ran into her again and introduced myself.  She is Jody Gnant and she has an amazing story to tell about indie marketing over the net.  She actually traded one year’s rent on her house in Phoenix to Kyle MacDonald from one red paperclip for studio time to complete her album.  We talked at the end of a long day at Podcamp Boston about songwriting, new media, and took questions from her live streaming audience.   Check out her music and lifecast at jodygnant.com.

Long time friends of For the Sake of the Song may remember a show41 from January 2008 with  Corin Raymond and Sean Cotton: The Undesirables.  Exactly a year ago on April 29, 2008, I caught up with Corin Raymond again, this time touring with North Carolina Songwriter, Jonathan Byrd.  At the time they were just embarking upon a house concert tour of Canada together and were both preparing for the launch of new solo albums:   Jonathan Byrd’s:  The Law and the Lonesome, and Corin Raymond’s: There will Always be a Small Time.  We did the interview surrounded by twenty thousand records in  Jiving Johny’s basement.  The environment and the conversation were absolutely brilliant.  Unfortunately, the podcaster was not so brilliant.  I had the recording levels set too high and the quality of the recording leaves much to desired.  I kept putting off editing the show because of that.  In the end, it’s too good a conversation, and Jonathan Byrd is too good a songwriter not to share with you.  Please bear with the sound quality. It’s worth it.

This summer I volunteered at the open stage at the Mariposa Folk Festival. There I met Sean Peever,  a musician I had been wanting to hear for many years.  The two of us and Shawn Sage make up a trifecta of folksinging Seans in Ontario. While I was compiling stats, I revisited my post, Milestones, from April 22, 2008 where I totaled up all my podcast episodes.  At the time I had produced over 236 audio programs.

In the last year, I have released 45 Episodes of For the Sake of the Song, for a total of 95.   I also produced 51  Episodes of Catholic Roundup podcast under 3 show names: A Catholic Canadian, The Catholic New Media Roundup and now Catholic Roundup.  We produced 4 new episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast this winter for a total of 18 episodes.  I also released 4 special reports about Podcamp Boston 2 in 2007.  My recording of my brother in law, Drew Beatty’s podcast novel, White Trash Land has 23 sections. Drew is currently podcasting his second novel Lost Gods.    From 2006-2008, I hosted about 20 episodes of the Librivox Community Podcast.  I have also completed 115 sections of public domain books and poetry for Librivox.   I have 21 videos up on my youtube page.  There are probably a couple special one-off projects with groups like Twisted pines that I’m overlooking as well.  I also regularly record audio feedback for other podcasts and record concerts and demos for myself and others but have no accurate count of those, so I’m only counting audio and video I’ve released on the net.

This month also marks the 2nd anniversary of  RussTV, my good friend Russ Clayton’s YouTube program for children. I have been on his show several times over the past two years.  I was on RussTV: Episode 4- Guiters and Banjers and Episode 9: Down By The Little Lake.

This week, we recorded 2 more public domain songs for Russ TV: Wild Mountain Thyme and Teddy Bear’s Picnic.  Enjoy.

He performed a house concert at our home on November 5, 2000. At that time, I also wrote a review of his debut album, Here Goes. Over the past 10 years, I have presented Steve in my home several times and as a headliner at the Mundy’s Bay Folk Society, and he has produced 3 wonderful albums.  Steve has recently moved to the Ottawa area from Winnipeg.  It was a wonderful surprise when he emailed me a few weeks ago to say that he was doing a house concert in the next town over from me.  We had a wonderful conversation in my rec room. Enjoy.

Chartier and Dale Russell are the founders of the School Alliance for Student Songwriters (SASS), a group which facilitates songwriting clubs in schools and arranges songwriting showcases and contests for students in the Durham County region of Ontario and in British Columbia.

I met them in September at the launch party/brainstorming session for the Stellula Songwriting in the Schools initiative here in Simcoe County. Artemis Chartier is a high school teacher and singer-songwriter. Dale Russell was a guitar player with the Guess Who for 17 years in the 80′s and 90s. They are lovely people and wonderful songwriters. Be sure to check out the SASS website to see the wonderful things they are doing with enabling young people to tell their stories through song.

Earlier this year, I interviewed Washboard Hank, about his memories of Willie P. Bennett.

I was able to interview Hank at the Twisted Pines Music in Movies festival about his own music and songwriting. Washboard Hank is a Canadian folk music institution. He has released several CDs of quirky and humorous music, a Children’s CD and played for many years in Fred Eaglesmith’s band. Our interview delved into the meat of songwriting but also features some of his more adult oriented material so I’m putting an Itunes explicit label on this episode.

James Gordon has been a fixture of the Canadian folk music scene for over 25 years. He was a founding member of Tamarack, and played with them for 22 years before going solo about 10 years ago. I interviewed James at the Mariposa Folk Festival on the deck of his hand-made houseboat, the Eramosa Belle. For this episode, James and I both played a lovely handmade guitar built by Ron Belanger. Matthew Wayne Selznick is one of the pioneers in podcasting and Social Media. His podcast novel, Brave Men Run, which was first released in November 2005, it was the first work of fiction to be released simultaneously as a podcast, downloadable ebook, and for purchase as a print-on-demand book. Over the last 3 years, he has had several podcasts. He is well known as an advocate of the DIY (Do It Yourself) philosophy of creativity. He was involved with Podiobooks.com in its early stages and now is a community developer at Mahalo.com. He is also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who is working to post 20 years of his music on his website at mattselznick.com .

His novel, Brave Men Run, has been picked up for mainstream release by Swarm Press and will be released on July 13. Matthew is asking all his fans to purchase the book on July 13 at Amazon.com to see if we can get it to number 1 on the science fiction charts. He will also be running an all day Brave Men Run-a- thon/ release party at mattselznick.com on July 13.
