So my sister has started up a cool concert series in Toronto called Rockin’ The Cradle, the last Sunday of every month, at the Tranzac Club in Toronto. They are billing it as an event for people aged 0 to 100. They lower the volume, have activities and a dance space for the kids and book family friendly indie rock acts (and others).

I’ll let my sister explain it from her blog.

I’m just a regular music loving mama who loves being a parent, but misses going to and playing live music, so I decided to organize rock shows for parents that kids can come to and enjoy. These are all age shows that are appropriate for babes in arms, toddlers, children, teenagers, parents, grandparents, etc. etc. The only people who shouldn’t come are those who dislike children (there will be a lot of children in attendance)!

This month’s concert is on February 22 from 1-3 pm at the Tranzac Club (292 Brunswick Avenue) features Bry Webb from the Constantines and a group called Positive Thinking Seminar (at least I think they are a band ). The event is pay as you can and families are encouraged to come out. Apparently the Tranzac also serves a yummy Sunday brunch at that time.

I’ll be booting over there right after Podcamp Toronto wraps up and spending some time with my family listening to some great music.

Tomorrow is April K27 and it’s on a weekend, woohoo.
This week there are a few initiatives on the Net you may wish to comment upon.
1) In some sad news, Ross from the Dry Shave podcast has had a heart attack. Mark Blevis has organized a campaign to send Ross funny get well cards. For more information, you can check out Mark’s post at http://www.markblevis.com/humourous-get-well-cards-for-ross/ .
Please send your humourous get well cards by May 5 to:
Zee
c/o Mark Blevis
PO Box 4813, Station E
Ottawa, ON K1S 5H9
Canada
Mark will forward them on to Ross to enjoy.

2) Mike the Birdman Dodd of This Week in Geek has organized a campaign to help his friend, classmate and podcasting partner, Pierce Derks. In short: Pierce is an American Citizen applying for Canadian Residency and the process is stalled. This is putting his education at Niagara College in jeopardy unless he can come up with about $10000 for International student tuition fees. You can find out more at http://www.savepierce.org.

3) Congratulations to Dave Fleet ( http://davefleet.com ) for completing the Boston Marathon, and for using his marathon run to raise $2315 for cancer research.

That’s all for me today

Take some time tomorrow to send some feedback to a podcast and continue the conversation.

Over the past few weeks, several of my peers in the podcasting community have reached the milestone of 100 shows. Congratulations to Mark and Bob at the Canadian Podcast Buffet, Isabelle and Dave at Broca’s Area, Mitch Joel at Six Pixels of Separation, and Javier, Gerard and the crew at the Hands and Feet Show. The Bob and AJ show is at show 98 and should be able to release their 100th show before Podcasters Across Borders in June.

My current episode of For the Sake of the Song with Kyle Heimann from Popple is Episode 50. I was feeling a little down that it will be some time before I reach my 100th episode, then I started doing soime math. I currently have 6 more shows ‘in the can’ to be released between now and the end of June. With podcast extras, and other special episodes I have 65 produced shows on my For the Sake of the Song site. I also produced 25 audio podcasts for my Lenten multimedia project, 40 Days of Catholic Media on my Catholic Canadian site. We produced 14 episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast this winter. My recording of my brother in law, Drew Beatty’s podcast novel, White Trash Land has 23 sections. Since October 2006, I have hosted about 20 episodes of the Librivox Community Podcast. I have also completed 89 sections of public domain books and poetry for Librivox. There are probably a couple special one-off projects with groups like Twisted pines that I’m overlooking as well.

Just a sec while I do the math here.

65 plus 25– carry the one, add 14 plus 23, then 20 more add 89 equals…

236 audio programs that I have produced in the last 18 months or so.

(give or take a few)

Well none of my projects is currently near the century mark, I do believe I’m amassing a fair body of work.

Enough of blowing my own horn. I now return you to the regularly scheduled conversations with some wonderful songwriters.

About 18 months ago, we made the difficult decision to close the Mundy’s Bay Folk Society after 17 years due to rising expenses and declining attendance at our monthly live music performances.

I was quite excited when a new organization in our town sprung up to present live music. Twisted Pines Music and Art produced a 5 day festival of music, movies and visual arts last Victoria Day weekend at a variety of locations in Midland and Penetanguishene. I helped out stage managing one of the stages, and recording as many interviews as I could for my podcast. It’s not often that so many songwriters are in one place in my hometown.

Over the past year Twisted Pines has been quite active in producing a variety of events in my area: concerts, movies, author readings at local libraries, performances in local schools and regular after school workshops at the Penetanguishene library.

This May 9-19, they are presenting Twisted Pines Music in Movies featuring nightly screenings of music themed movies and documentaries, followed by Q and A sessions with filmakers and musicians involved in the movies and performances by some amazing bands. Festival Performers will also be doing presentations at a number of local schools during the weeks of the Festival. I’ll be there recording interviews, helping out where I can, and enjoying the general vibe of the festival.

Over the past year I have produced nearly a dozen programs in conjuction with Twisted Pines Music and Art. Check out the following:

I had a bit of a brainwave. Alot of podcasters use the free K7 voicemail service to receive voice comments. A drawback of the service is that like many free internet services, if you don’t use it for 30 days, you lose your K7 number. I also know that podcasters love to receive voice feedback, so I have a simple proposal:

I am declaring the 7th, 17th and 27th of each month as K7 days. On a K7 day take 7 minutes to leave voice feedback for some of your favorite podcasts.

In my feedback I may mention that it’s K7 day and ask the recipients to pass it on. It can be a kind of chain of good will, … and it will reset the counter for the recipient’s voicemail number.

If your like me, you’ve been meaning to respond to a few shows at any given time. On the K17th of March, try to reach out to other podcasters.

P.S. my K7 feedback number is 206-337-0611.

Remember that K7 numbers are in the Seattle area code so normal long distance charges may apply. I use SkypeOut, so I have almost unlimited North American calling.

Update: I set up a K7 Day group on facebook. Join the group and remember to add to the conversation by leaving a message for a podcaster on the K17th.

Here’s a little roundup of my podcasting activity for 2007.

I have released 40 Episodes of For the Sake of the Song thus far and have about 9 ready to go in the upcoming weeks.

On the weekend of October 28, I was feeling sorry for myself that I wasn’t at Podcamp Boston 2 so I called several of my friends who were at Podcamp Boston and released about 4 Podcamp Boston Special Reports.

These reports evolved into a regular podcast for Podcamp Toronto with Connie Crosby. We have currently produced 6 Episodes of the Podcamp Toronto Podcast leading up to the event on February 23 and 24.

I produced a Podcamp Toronto audio promo to use on your podcast here.

2007 Also saw the release of my recording of my brother-in-law, Drew Beatty’s novel, White Trash Land, on Podiobooks.com . It has done fairly well for Andrew there.

I’ve continued to record audiobooks with Librivox.org and I continue to be a semi-regular host for the Librivox Community Podcast. Here is a list of the 15 podcasts I hosted for Librivox in 2007.

This Week, I thought I would do an End of year Round-up of For the Sake of the Song and replay some of the great music I’ve featured this year. It was tricky picking just 12 or 13 songs. Since March, I have recorded 45+ episodes of For the Sake of the Song. If each song had 3 or 4 songs, thats over 120 songs to choose from. This is episode 37, so you can see from above that I already have a number of shows ready for 2008. Upcoming guests include John Lunman, Peter Judd , The Undesirables, Trout Fishing in America, Mark Blevis, Manitoba Hal, Pork Belly Futures and Chris Yale.

I have also continued to be a regular contributor to the Librivox Community Podcast and have started a podcast for Podcamp Toronto. In 2007, I produced about 60 podcast episodes, and I’m not sure how many chapters and poems for Librivox.

The Edmonton Journal ran a weekly comic in the Mid 1980′s called Bub Slug. It’s authors eventually spun it off into a successful syndicated cartoon called Betty. In one memorable episode (at least I still remember it 20 years later), Bub and Betty came into some money and joined the Edmonton Cultural Society. The women of the cultural society were raising money to traslate Cats and 42nd Street into Italian, so as to make them cultural.

Today, Culture Canada launched podcasts.culture.ca to showcase Canadian culture in podcast form. My friends Hugh McGuire and Chris Goringe from Librivox were active behind the scenes setting this up. I’m not sure that it differs substantially in content from the amazing Canadian Podcast Directory at canadapodcasts.ca, but it is really neat to see my podcast and my picture featured on an official Government of Canada website.

That seals it. For the Sake of the Song is officially a Canadian Cultural Experience. Sort of like Tim Hortons and Beaver Tails I guess.

Edit: The folks at the Canadian Cultural Podcast Directory sent me a nifty badge to add to my site. WooHoo double affirmations that I am cultural.

My summer of podcasting is now officially over. Unless the mood strikes me to record a special episode, I will be releasing shows this fall on a 10 day cycle on the 10th, 20th and 3oth of the month. I have 9 shows recorded and scheduled up to December 10, and I have 4 shows recorded and ready to edit.

I noticed on my friend Jennifer’s website that people are still finding it hard to navigate my Past Podcasts Page. I hope that this handy table makes it easier for all of my new listeners to find and catch up on my past episodes.
PAST EPISODES

You can find links to all past episodes below. Click on the episode number for shownotes, the guest’s name for their website, the blue triangle to listen on this page, or download to download the episode.

I’ve been busy this summer recording and editing episodes of For the Sake of the Song. Since Victoria Day Weekend, the family and I have been to four excellent festivals, Twisted Pines Music and Art Festival here in Midland, the Minesing Unplugged Festival in Utopia, Ontario, the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, and the Canturbury Folk Festival in Ingersoll. We hope to get to a couple others later this summer.

This year at Mariposa I was both volunteer and performer. I helped organize the Open Stage and was part of two workshops on the Folkplay stage entitled: My Favorite Children’s Song. On Saturday the sound system was giving us all kinds of trouble, so we walked in front of the stage and performed an acoustic workshop. On Sunday, the sound system was cooperating and we had one of those magical workshops where four individual performers walked on to the stage, but a band walked off. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Steve Caston, David Zub, and my friend, Patti Ellis. Musical magic was in the air. We were all playing and providing harmonies on each other’s songs and I think it was as much fun for the musicians as it was for the audience. They also gave us a lovely orange Mariposa Folkplay Performers T-shirt.

My other Mariposa T-shirt says CREW, and I got it for working the Open Stage. My good friend, Jennifer Ives was coordinating this stage and worked along with Ken and Arlene Allen and Olivia Duck. We had a great time and some of the music on the Open Stage rivaled that of the Official performances. Standout performances for me on the open stage included: Olivia Duck, Steve Caston, Pat Clark, The Good Tangerines, and Tom Kremer and Friends.

I also noticed a sadder side of the Open Stage. It was set up in 20 minute sets from 11- 4:30 on both Saturday and Sunday. In order to perform, you just needed to come to the Open Stage and sign up after 10 am on either day. We filled all the slots by 12:30 on each day. Once we were full there was a steady stream of disappointed people coming up to us to ask if there was any more room. Most people were quite polite, but for some there was an undercurrent of desparation and entitlement, that they must play at the open stage. Several people tried sweet talk or pleading, one tried to bribe us (didn’t work), and one young man asked who he should kill to take their spot. I told him that last time somebody tried that the corpse played anyway. There was also an unpleasant incident with someone who was determined to subvert the Open Stage into his own personal showcase stage (don’t ask). I’ve got to a stage as a performer that although I still feel the urge to share my music, if an open stage is full I can sometimes pass on performing for the night. It was a little sad to see the desparation of people to say “I performed at Mariposa”. Perhaps I see things this way because I have had the good fortune to be asked to play at this fine festival about 4 times since it returned to Orillia. But even when we are at other festivals as audience, I no longer feel compelled to sign up for the Open Stages. If the opportunity arises and I’m not listening to one of the other stages, I’m still happy to perform, but I don’t feel the compulsion to “be on the stage” that I witnessed at Mariposa.

The following weekend at the Canturbury Folk Festival in Ingersoll was magical. The whole town of Ingersoll pulls together to put on three days of FREE music and crafts in a beautiful downtown park next to a creek. The site is small enough that our daughter spent the whole weekend on the playground within eysight, while we sat and listened to the show. They had a great lineup of performers from all over Canada and the UK, but with a strong contingent of local performers. Congratulations to Ted Comiskey Artistic Director, and everybody who made the Canturbury Folk Festival such a magical weekend. We will definitely put it on our calendar for next year. I particularly enjoyed the mainstage sets by Tanglefoot, Wendell Ferguson, Ian Thomas, and Laura Vinson. In fact I have a Laura Vinson story to tell you.

As an 11 year old living in Ryley, Alberta, I would look out my window across the prairies, while listening to my Radio Shack Crystal Radio which I built from a kit, and dream of one day having a record or maybe my own radio show.
My parents bought me two presents for my 12th birthday: A Hohner classical guitar (which I still use in my Grade 2 classroom), and tickets to see Laura Vinson and Red Wing at the Holden Theatre (this would be about 1979). I was very excited by her performance, and after the show my mother and I spoke briefly with her. She was very encouraging, and I couldn’t wait to get home to practice my guitar. Alas, I tried to teach myself over the years and was not successful.
Then the guitar made the rounds through my brother, my mother and my sister, before returning to me around the time of my 25th birthday. My present to myself that year was guitar lessons. Over the years I have performed as a folk musician and children’s performer, first with covers and eventually writing enough original material to record a CD in my basement in 2003. About 1-1/2 years ago I started recording public-domain audio books for librivox.org, which led to producing my current podcasts (on demand Internet audio shows). I am just amazed that now at 39, I have both the record and the radio show, and I recorded them in my own basement! I was thrilled this weekend to sit down with Laura Vinson to record an upcoming episode of For the Sake of the Song.
Be sure to listen throughout August for Twisted August. These will be shows that I recorded at the Twisted Pines Music and Art Festival in Midland on the Victoria Day Weekend.

Today is Canada’s 140th birthday. (Oh-Oh that means in November I’ll be 40). Anyhow, on May 18 I got a chance to play the Six String Nation Guitar and I interviewed Jowi Taylor about the project, at the Twisted Pines Music Festival. This morning as my family was getting ready to go out to Midland’s Canada Day celebrations, I got a brainwave that the Six String Nation Guitar could be the subject of the patriotic Canadian song I’ve long wanted to write. So, here is Six String Nation my contribution to Canadian patriotism, written on July 1.

Six String Nation
July 1, 2007 © Sean McGaughey

C Am F	G
Jowi dreamed of a way to tell our stories
C Am F	G
from the humblest moments to a nation’s greatest glories
F F C C/B AM
From sea to sea to sea he crossed our land
F G C	G7
Searching for fragments of our past.

George recalls arriving on our shores a refugee
dreaming of a future filled with opportunity,
Fifty years along he took the wood from near and far
Fashioning our nation’s guitar.

F G C	C7
We are citizens of the six-string nation
F G C	C7
Its song unites us across the generations
F F G
From the scoundrels to the saints
C C/B Am
we all belong
F G	G7
Oh Canada, this is our song
G	C
Oh Canada.

From the dance floor at Handhills Lake, to the seats of Massey Hall
St Boniface Museum, the Forum in Montreal
The Parliament Building, the lighthouse at Cape Grace
It’s part of your heritage. This is Canada.

Henderson, Macdondald, Lucy Maud Montgomery
John Ware, Nancy Green, Trudeau, Wayne Gretzky
Lawren Harris, Joe Lebobe, Jack London, and the Rocket

This special Canada Day episode of For the Sake of the Song consists of me playing the Six String Nation Guitar, my interview with Jowi Taylor, and the debut recording of my new song Six String Nation. Happy Canada Day. (Whew it’s 11:22 pm- I just got this out under the wire).

Over IM this morning with Sean McGaughey he pointed out the recently Derek Miller of The Penmachine Podcast has a birthday fast approching! He has also received some news that isn’t so Happy. You can read about it on his blog, he has been amazingly open and honest, but I feel this is not the time or place to get into that in great detail. Anyways in light of all that we want to put togeher a bunch of Happy Birthday and Well Wishes for Derek. We need two things, first is some audio. Say whatever you want, from as simple as “Happy Birthday” or more personal if you choose. Mark Blevis has steped up to take on the task of editing it all together, so send your audio to (markblevis@gmail.com) markblevis (at) gmail (dot) com. We would like to keep it short so try and keep comments to 5-10 seconds each. The other thing we need is to get the word out. Twitter it, Blog it, whatever you can do to help. We would like it to be a surprise but it’s not the end of the world if it gets out and we get more response! Check back to this post for update on how it’s going or if there is any new information!

What a weekend in Kingston! PAB 2007 was amazing! Congratulations to
Mark, Bob, Cat, and Andrea for organizing such a great conference.

Some of the standout presentations for me were: How Podcasting Will Save the World by

Hugh McGuire, Five Low-cost or No-cost Treats For Your Sound by Bruce Murray, Audio Drama: It Just Might Save Your Life by Jack Ward and the notorious Broken Toasters, William Shatner and Podcast Burnout by Neil Gorman. I also got to attend the informal presentation of From Idea to Air: Making Radio Stories That Don’t Suck in Tod Maffin’s hotel room.

I had some great conversations with John and Maureen from Baba’s Beach, Tommy Vallier, Jay and Amaya from Uncle Seth, Terry Fallis, William Spaetzel, Nico, Barry from Barrie, Scarborough Dude, Vergel Evans, and I think I convinced Danielle Rossi to start up his long delayed podcast. I wowed everyone with the beryl desktop on Ubuntu on my laptop. I also recorded the 100th episode of the deyscast with Bill Deys. Congratulations Bill.

While I was at the conference, my wife and daughter hung out by the pool and shopped their way through downtown Kingston. A good time was had by all. I’m already counting the days until the next podcamp or PAB. Thanks everyone for a great weekend.

After 11 years, the family of Dudley George finally have some closure and vindication. Dudley George was participating in a peaceful occupation of the Ipperwash Provincial Park in 1995 to protest an ongoing land claim dispute of his band. The federal government had taken part of their reserve in 1942 to build an army base, and never returned it.

Dudley George was killed by a police sniper in a botched OPP raid on the peaceful protest.

11 years later a provincial inquiry has finally published its results. Here is a brief summary from a CBC report.

Ipperwash inquiry spreads blame for George’s death

“The government of former Ontario premier Mike Harris, Ottawa and the OPP all bear responsibility for events that led to the 1995 death of Dudley George, the head of the Ipperwash inquiry said Thursday.”

At the time of the Ipperwash protest, I wrote “Borrowed Land” to summarize my feelings on the issue. I recorded it on my CD. Have a listen.

<itunes:summary>After 11 years, the family of Dudley George finally have some closure and vindication.
Have a listen.</itunes:summary>

I had only been artistic director for 2 years, and had been brought on after the original committee had decided to shut the doors, but I still felt it was a great loss to the community. It is very encouraging that just 6 months later, live folk and blues music is returning to Midland in a big way. Paul Northcott, one of the early Mundy’s Bay volunteers has organized the Twisted Pines Music and Arts Festival in Midland and Penetanguishene on the Weekend of May 18-21. Events will be held at the Kings Wharf Theatre, local bars and restaurants and the North Simcoe Recreation Centre. Confirmed acts include Downchild Blues Band, Ken Whiteley, Fathead, Richard Knechtel, and Fred Eaglesmith. For more information or to purchase tickets, surf on over to http://www.twistedpines.com/ .

See you there.

My mother points out that it is over a year since I updated this blog.
Actually she pointed out that it was 3 months, … and 6 months… and 9
months… You get they idea.

In the last 1-1/2 years, I have been very busy with a new workplace, a
new home, listening to a million podcasts, booking acts for a folk club,
recording public domain audio-books for Librivox.org, spending time with
my wife and daughter, and rediscovering my faith.

In an attempt to rediscover this blog, I will start to answer the
question: So what have you been up to?

Funny you should ask.

On the music front, my entire CD and several newer songs are available
on my EZFOLK.COM site. http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/600/

Last December 26, one of my songs, Homeless Babe was included on a list of 128 CC licensed Christmas Songs on Some Rights Reserved, the blog of Uwe Hermann, a German Debian developer. The article was featured on boingboing! This led to over 1500 downloads throughout the year. The song is
currently the #1 all-time downloaded Christmas song on Ezfolk.com.

I still maintain my classroom webpage, but at a different school. Mr. McGaughey’s Grade 2 class http://par.scdsb.on.ca/classes/mcgaughey

I have been recording chapters of public domain audiobooks for Librivox.org. Over 2500 people from around the world are volunteering to try torecord ALL PUBLIC DOMAIN WRITINGS and release them as free
audiobooks. My (somewhat out of date) page on librivox is http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/DuctapeGuy
. Some of my contributions to librivox include: Host of Librivox Community Podcast

Episode 5: October 12, 2006

Episode 6: October 19, 2006

I posted some of my music onto EZfolk.com.
They are are smaller folk-acoustic music community and I thought that my
music would be well appreciated by their audience. I posted my duct tape
song yesterday, and first thing this morning, it was #1 on their daily
humour charts. My other music is charting well on the singer-songwriter
charts. I think I found a small pond in which to be a big fish (well
medium-sized anyway).
