Steve was very generous to sit down with me for a wide ranging discussion about songwriting during a whirlwind day prior to his feature performance at the festival just before flying home.

Thanks again Steve.

Steve was very generous to sit down with me for a wide ranging discussion about songwriting during a whirlwind day prior to his feature performance at the festival just before flying home.
Thanks again Steve.

Last month my family attended the Canmore Folk Festival. While we were there I spent alot of time with my friend Rhea March who founded U22 productions. U22 is a non profit organization dedicated to nurturing and developing the talents of Albertan performers under the age of 22. On Friday July 29, The Communitea Cafe in Canmore hosted a showcase concert featuring several young performers. I recorded that concert and will feature the concert recordings in the next 2 podcast episodes.
Performers featured this episode:
Layton Kramer- 16 year old songwriter from Canmore Alberta
Dean Kheroufi is a 16 year old wizard with a 6 string bass and a looping pedal.
The Command Sisters are 13 and 16 year old sisters who have recently landed a development deal in Nashville. With their catchy melodies and tight harmonies they are an act to watch out for.
Michah Turchet is a 16 year old “country boy” from small town Alberta who has undertaken to master flamenco guitar and he’s well on his way.
Next episode will feature the conclusion of the U22 showcase with performances by The Doll Sisters, Braden Gates, Samantha and Emily Schultz and Scenic Route to Alaska.

On the 4 hour drive to Podcamp London, this morning, I had the idea to do a session where I would demonstrate how to use audacity to produce a podcast whilst producing a podcast. I chose the topic of comfort food. At the opening session in the morning, I asked people to record audio clips about their favorite comfort foods, then send them to me by email, send me a link or even by bluetooth to my phone. (One guy tried the bluetooth trick but it didn’t work). Then at 1:30 I attached my computer to a projector in a seminar room, gathered up the clips and produced this short podcast. All the while, we were discussing podcasting, the tools I was using and the importance of story.

Thanks to Nick, Joe, @anthonymarco and all the people who attended the session. The closing music is Peanut Butter Sandwiches by Popple .

For four years, I would record interviews for For the Sake of the Song all summer at festivals around Ontario, then I would release them year round on a twice monthly schedule. This winter, I found my busy home and worklife was very busy. I also have been quite focussed on my other podcast, The Catholic Roundup. So I did what so many other long running podcasters eventually do. I Podfaded.

After four years and 120+ interviews with songwriters I think I accomplished what I set out to do when I started the podcasters. I have interviewed some amazing musicians, I’ve grown as a songwriter, and I have done the radio show I always wanted.

But I still have about half a dozen unreleased shows from last summer and fall, and occasionally I run across a musician I would really like to interview. So I’m not going to end this show completely– just become a periodic podcast producer.

The 51st Edition of the Mariposa Folk Festival is right around the corner on July 8-10, 2011. I still have 4 unreleased interviews from last year’s festival with some wonderful musicians. I will try to release these shows leading up to the festival this year.

To get this started, please enjoy a few of my pictures from last year’s Mariposa Folk Festival.

Eileen McGann has been a favorite songwriter of my wife and I for over a decade. Originally hailing from central Ontario, Eileen lived in Calgary for a number of years and has called Vancouver Island home for about 11 years. Eileen’s influences include the folk revival of the 1960s, and traditional English and Celtic folk music. She has just released her first album in 6 years, entitled, A Pocketful of Rhymes.

About mid-afternoon a five piece band, Knock Knock Ginger, began to perform a set of smart, funny acoustic based pop music. I was blown away.

Here’s a brief bio from their website.

Knock Knock Ginger is an indie-pop band from Waterloo, Ontario. Knock Knock Ginger has a guitarist who sings (Milosz Sikora), a keyboardist (Melissa Djurakov), a drummer (Owen Cherry), a bassist (Lisa Rafferty) and a guitarist who plays trumpet (Matt Charters).

The band’s sound has been described as “experimental,” but they can’t quite figure out why. They’d like you to think that they play fun, melodic pop songs with a lyrical slant.

Knock Knock Ginger has been together in various shapes and sizes since the fall of 2004. They recorded their latest EP, Based on a True Story, at the House of Miracles in London and saw it rise to the top ten on campus radio and the CBC radio3 R-30. They’ve played a lot of shows in a lot of different cities from Ontario to the East Coast.

After their set, I had a chance to sit down with Milosz, Melissa, Lisa and Matt to talk music and songwriting with them.

Cheryl Gaudet is a songwriter who hails from Nova Scotia. She has 2 CDs of original music out. In 1990,she had a dream to host a festival at the wonderful Eaglewood Resort in Pefferlaw,Ontario. I caught up with her at the 20th annual Eaglewood Folk Festival. We reminisced about past festivals, talked about songwriting and her move to Mexico.
The 21st annual Eaglewood Folk Festival is fast approaching on August 27-29, 2010. Check it out for a wonderful festival experience.

For over a month the Sue Passmore show has been available without any sound. I’ve run into my friend and fan of For the Sake of the Song , Jeff Potts, several times in the last six weeks. Each time, he mentioned that he was unable to open my For the Sake of the Song episode with Sue Passmore. I agreed that was very peculiar and could not figure out what might be going wrong. Today Jeff emailed me again and I decided to download it myself to see what was up. What was up was twenty-six minutes and fourteen seconds of silence. My apologies to all 500+ people who downloaded a blank show. And here for your listening pleasure is my interview with Sue Passmore, now with 100% more audio. Thanks Jeff for your persistence in reminding me.

Update: Since I first released this Show the Good Lovelies won a 2010 Juno for Best Folk/Roots Album by a Group. Congratulations Sue, Kerri and Caroline.

Sue Passmore is the second member of the Good Lovelies that I have been able to interview for my podcast. We found a semi quiet spot in the woods during a break in the rain at the Eaglewood Folk Festival to sit down and talk songwriting. I interviewed her bandmate, Caroline Brooks over a year ago. It has been an interesting exercise to talk to different members of the same band about songwriting. This summer, I’ll be looking for Kerry Ough at festivals to complete the set.

January 21, 2010: Today the great Canadian author, musician and raconteur, Paul Quarrington passed away at the age of 56 after a long battle with lung cancer. Paul has long been one of my favorite novelists, and he was a mighty fine songwriter as well. I was honored to interview him for my podcast a couple of year ago. I first released this show on April 8, 2008.

Safe Journey Paul. May you rest in peace.

For many years I have enjoyed the novels of Paul Quarrington. Paul is a Canadian author who has written novels, magazine articles, screenplays and songs for over 30 years. He has received the prestigious Governor General’s Literary award for English Fiction and the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. In the early 80′s, he had a number 1 Canadian single with Martin Worthy as Quarrington-Worthy. He and Martin Worthy also toured for many years with Joe Hall and The Continental Drift. They are still together as the core of Pork Belly Futures, which also includes Chas Elliot, Stuart Laughton and Rebecca Campbell.

This episode of For the Sake of the Song is a bit unusual. In November, Pork Belly Futures played a benefit concert for the Twisted Pines Music Festival in Penetanguishene. Paul Quarrington and Claire Cameron also did public readings at the Midland and Penetanguishene public libraries. Their day was so tightly booked that I could not record a dedicated 1/2 hour interview with Paul. Instead, you will hear us at the library readings, performances by Pork Belly Futures at the concert that evening, and short interviews with Paul Quarrington, Martin Worthy and Chas Elliot.

<itunes:summary>January 21, 2010: Today the great Canadian author, musician and raconteur, Paul Quarrington passed away at the age of 56 after a long battle with lung cancer.

I first saw Katherine Wheatley perform at the Eaglewood Folk Festival in about 1993. She became an instant favorite of mine. Over the years we have seen her in concert dozens of times, and several years ago I had the pleasure of opening for her and Wendell Ferguson at the Orillia Folk Society. Katherine Wheatley is a veteran of the Canadian Folk and roots music scene. She plays in a number of bands. She is a solid guitar player. Her vocals and melodies are as expansive as the prairies. In her songs, she weaves wonderful stories of ordinary people that are deeply rooted in Canadian soil.

She released two albums in the 90′s, ‘Straight Line’ and ‘Habits and Heroes’. Her long awaited new album, Landed is now available on her website. You can find her music at katherinewheatley.com.

I interviewed Katherine on the grounds of the Canterbury Folk Festival in Ingersoll in the midst of their 10th anniversary celebration. You can hear some of the festivities going on around us.
